“Fine,” Wilder says, pulling his cell phone out of his pocket. The screen lights up. He has several missed calls from his mother, Jaxson, and other names I don’t recognize. “I don’t have any service in this bunker, and if you all want Little Death's password, I have a call to make.”

“Pallas, take him down to find some reception,” Chiron says, and Pallas rolls back his chair.

Wilder goes to follow, and I rise.

“You can wait here, Leigh,” Pallas says behind me. “It’ll only take a second.”

Wilder pauses. “Leigh comes with me.”

“I think you two can survive five minutes without each other,” Selene says, pulling her straight purple hair into a messy bun. “I promise Leigh will be in one piece when you return.”

“That’s reassuring.” Wilder glances at me. “Leigh, do you want to stay?”

I nod. Staying allows me to talk to Chiron more about the letters without Wilder. We need to discuss them more, but I’d rather do that alone. “It’s fine. I’ll wait here.”

“You heard her,” Selene says, and Wilder scowls. “Now, be gone, or I’ll stick my shadows on you.” She wiggles her fingers, but nothing happens. I collapse into my seat while Selene laughs.

After Wilder and Pallas leave, I glare at Selene. “You shouldn’t tease him like that.”

Selene’s smile breaks. “Why not? He makes it so easy.”

I sigh as someone enters the room—a petite girl with a face full of piercings.

“Yes?” Chiron asks the new girl.

“You’re needed downstairs.”

Chiron nods. “Leigh, I look forward to working together.”

“Wait—” The door closes.

It’s just Selene and I. Shit. I did not intend to hang out one-on-one with a Lunar Witch.

“Finally.” Selene groans theatrically. “I hoped I’d get to talk to you.”

I keep my attention glued to the door. If I stare at it hard enough, Chiron will return, and I won’t have to talk to Selene. She’s always watching me, and it gives me the creeps. “I can’t say the feeling is mutual.”

“That hurts.”

I shrug. “We are working together. It doesn’t make us friends.”

“Not with that attitude,” Selene replies. “Why are you being so hostile toward me?”

I scoff. “I wonder.”

“Is it the ghosts?” she asks, and I squirm. She’s so open about her magic. It’s unsettling. “Your prejudice surprises me since you talk to them, too.”

Terror seizes my lungs. No one knows the truth. No one alive anyway.

“Relax, I haven’t told anyone about you.” She takes a deep breath. “But for me to keep that promise and not tell Pallas and Chiron the second they return; you need to drop the attitude. I understand you’re the princess, but a title doesn’t make you better than me.”

“I never said I was,” I say, assessing her. There’s no way she knows I’m a Lunar Witch. If she suspects it, she has no proof. But just in case, I’m denying it. “Why would you think I’m like you? We’ve known each other for five minutes.”

Selene shakes her head. “Leigh, I want us to be friends. It’s not my intention to upset you. But I thought maybe you had questions, and you can use me as a resource.
